  • Vietnam War escalation begins, 150,000 US troops deployed.
  • US black nationalist leader, Malcolm X is assassinated.
 ● 1964 (Spring of Junior/Fall of Senior years)
  • Gulf of Tonkin incident between USA North Vietnam.
  • US Surgeon General Terry warns against cigarette smoking.
  • The Beatles arrive on their first visit to the USA.
  • First Ford Mustang produced.
  • Nelson Mandela is sentenced to life imprisonment.
● 1963 (Spring of Sophomore/Fall of Junior years)
  • A quarter of million people participate in the civil rights March on Washington DC. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. makes his "I have a dream" speech.
  • USA and USSR establish "hotline" connection.
  •  President Kennedy assassinated on November 22nd in Dallas, Texas.

  • Cuban Missile Crisis - world stands on brink nuclear war. Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago independent from UK .
  • Adolf Eichmann (captured by Mossad agents in 1960) is sentenced to death and hanged in Israel for his part in the Holocaust during WW!!
  • Telstar world's first active communications satellite, is launched.
  • Johnny Carson debuts as host of The Tonight Show.
● 1961 (Fall of Freshman year)
  • NY Yankees star Mickey Mantle becomes the highest paid baseball player after signing a $75,000 contract and his teammate Roger Maris breaks (hits 61) Babe Ruth’s single season home run record of 60 which stood since 1927.
  • Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba fails.
  • Soviet cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin is the first human in space.
  • Sealing of East German border and building of Berlin Wall.
  • South Africa leaves British Commonwealth.
